Leeds University Union is proud to be an investors in people
A students' union exists to represent students to the University, the media and other outside organisations and to provide key services. Democracy is at the heart of what we do.
Six full-time Student Executive Officers are elected annually as trustees of the Union and they determine the overall policies and make decisions about major issues facing the Union. Alongside the Executive Officers there are also four Student Trustees and four Co-opted Trustees, the latter being people external to the Union. This group of people have ultimate responsibility for the Union and its activities.
The Board of Trustees are supported by a team of professional managers, who implement LUU's policies, undertake the on-going, day-to-day management of LUU and manage our staff.
We have a core staff group of around 180 people, but at any one time we can have up to 400 part-time staff members (mostly students) who work in our shops, bars and other functions.
Leeds University Union is a 'Not For Profit' organisation. This means that any profit made from our commercial operations goes towards providing services for our student members. Our members have fantastic opportunities to get involved in the Union, with over 260 sports clubs and recreational societie to choose from.
In recent years we have made substantial investments in the fabric of the building, and further improvements are being made as part of our three year plan. Services include a supermarket; an off-licence; a bookshop; a juice bar; five other bars and two nightclubs; a student employment service; an advice centre; an award-winning newspaper and radio station; and many others!
Leeds University Union is proud to hold a number of accreditations and awards for its services which include the Investors in People Award.
The Investors In People award means that Leeds University Union is an organisation that trains, develops, rewards and involves its staff to ensure that they have the right knowledge and skills to do the best at their job and to offer the best level of service to our members.
Other awards for Leeds University Union include the 'Best Bar None' Award for three of the bars, including recent Regional Awards for Terrace and Stylus.
Our cleaning department is an assessment centre for the British Institute of Cleaning Science, and we are proud to have the Community Service Legal Mark for our Student Advice Centre.
Mine won the BEDA Award for best Students' Union Venue in the country, and our nursery recently achieved Level 2 of the National Day Nursery Association Quality Counts kitemark award.
